An additional accessory dwelling unit proposed on top of a garage. Clients were looking for an independent living space to host relatives from abroad and/or rental income.
The program for the duplex renovation includes: upgraded mudroom, two bedrooms, washroom, kitchen, and dinning room on the main floor. The basement becomes a dedicated space for home business with: a pottery studio, secondary washroom & tv room. Attached to the house is the kiln room, garage/workshop & loft apartment above.
After many design iterations the solution for Keewatin Loft was to raise the roof & preserve the existing house volume. The envisioned space takes into consideration passive solar design strategies, adaptive-reuse of structure & material reclamation.

Concept Design

case #1
This proposal explores the purity of the cube as a natural form while embracing contemporary notions of spatial openness. The design maximizes interior volume through the allowed building height and a clean flat roof, creating a sense of clarity and balance. A constellation of windows and skylights floods the interior with natural light, shaping an atmosphere that is both expansive and refined.

case #2
Conceived as a 1½-story apartment, the design creates a clear distinction between public and private realms. The additional 850 square feet introduces cathedral ceilings in the foyer and enhances both visual and acoustic connectivity between spaces, fostering a sense of openness and cohesion throughout the interior.
